In May of 2008, which David you liked on "Idol" said a lot about who you were. Cook, eventual winner over Archuleta, has taken the show's familiar "rock ballad guy" role to a more credible place, and his husky-voiced hit, "The Time of My Life," doesn't require secret listening sessions.

One advantage of reaching the A-list is that you've earned enough capital to be honest about your taste. Johansson's set of Tom Waits covers is a high point in the star-digs-indie movement. Cut with Sitek, featuring Bowie (!), and impassioned by Scarlett, it's a surprising and dignified effort.

Every generation has its soul savior, and today all eyes are on John Mayer. With Claptonesque guitar riffs and heart-melting vocals, his solo efforts (and collaborations with stars such as Common) have made him the new king of pop.

Not since Peaches has a saucy songstress taken sass this far. Over singsongy antipop ballads, Perry skewers all that the scene--and plain good taste--holds sacred. Sample lyric: "You're so indie-rock it's almost an art/ You need SPF 45/ Just to stay alive."
The Best of Radiohead
We are in an era of high kindness from Radiohead--it's almost like the group is policing its own karma. Now add a greatest-hits LP (their first ever) to the donations-only disc and the generous touring. "The Best Of" corrals wildly eclectic anthems into an impressively natural order.
