D'Angelo: ''The Best So Far''
It's possible D'Angelo hasn't donned a shirt in ten years. But unless he's going to a convenience store, why should he? For the crooner, sexiness is key to the art, much as flirtatiousness is for R. Kelly. This convincing retrospective finds R&B at its most burbling and sultry.
Old to the New
There's a little of everything in this playlist, including the classic (Bobby Womack), the brand new (Estelle), and even the remixed (Marlena Shaw).

Ashanti
The Declaration is being trumpeted as Ashanti's turn toward creative control--if that's true, we'd like to hear more with her at the helm. The disc sparkles with new complexity and punch, helped by tricky beats from the likes of Pharrell and an emboldened performance by the lead diva.
Sy Smith
"Staying down to Earth is overrated," sings Sy Smith on her latest, a breezy and soaring set that proves her right. Dreamy but driven, passionate but playful, the "American Idol" singer's silken neo-soul recalls Jill Scott's, and Tribe-y beatscapes only help matters.
Dwele
"Sketches of a Man" is unusually pensive and nuanced neo-soul, cutting back on cockiness and replacing it with smart relationship poetry. Of course, all the rich rhymeology wouldn't mean much if it weren't underlined with plush beatscapes and soft vocal lines.
Plant Life
If you were to create a bionic band that compresses together the dazzling rhythms of B.T. Express, the sexy vocals of Prince, and the electro-funk sensibility of Afrika Bambaataa, you'd wind up with something similar to Plant Life. It's hard to pigeonhole the L.A. band's style, but like predecessors James Brown and Sly Stone, Plant Life has a knack for capturing the true essence of heartfelt soul music.
