The Stranglers
One of the most properly named outfits in British punk adds to its oeuvre with a pile of wizened sneers, bilious basslines, and--strangest of all--kitschy synth organs. It's a gloriously off-center hybrid from a band who believed in punk without ever getting behind its musical orthodoxies.

Daniel Martin Moore
If you carry as your burden a love-hate relationship with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, listen to Daniel Martin Moore and have it lightened. The Kentuckian, making his Sub Pop debut with "Stray Age," arrives with a warm, unpretentious folk that wouldn't be able to find Silver Lake on a map.
The Raveonettes
The Danish pair go a step further in their presentation of retro rock as something vicious. Surfy guitars, always packing switchblades, and dressed to kill, get matched with a sketchy programmed template. The genre's early days have been translated to its most modern.
Black Kids
Jacksonville's Black Kids now join Manchester's Ting Tings in a remarkable effort to make the Kills and Go! Team seem old. Thankfully, we need not take sides. On cleverness alone, it's hard to vote against the Kids, whose head-snapping retro beats are set off by a buffet of puns.
