2008 can best be described as the year of Auto-Tune. Hopefully that fascination will die; otherwise, we can all expect an agonizing year of hip-hop in 2009. On a brighter note, here's just a sample of some of the best music released this year, Auto-Tune or not.

Just when you thought you were up on all the latest hip-hop strains--you dug Crunk and Screw; you read that Times article on Krumpin'--along comes Hyphy. Yoking East Bay hip-hop's trademark chatty, sardonic rhymes to deep, stiff beats, Vallejo's E-40 puts Northern California back in the lead.
Black Milk
The thick, enveloping sound of 90s underground heroes like Tribe and De La joins with strong Motown threads in this Slum Village producer's tracks. Milk's skill is in knowing how to make an artful mess: his cuts maintain a homegrown scruffiness, but their punchy lyrics shine clearly.

Jurassic 5 combined old school vibes with new school beats and played a huge role in the mid-nineties indie hip-hop surge. Their innovative live performances incorporating turntable experimentation earned them a huge cult following worldwide.
